degram loaned me Snow Crash, so now I just keep reading it and not doing anything else. If you haven't read it go and read it instead of this post. If you have read it do the same. Well, back to reading.
when you finish that, read cryptonomicon...you won't post for a month, perhaps, but it will be more than worth it. btw, do you live in Athens, OH currently?
That was actually the first Stephenson book I read. Yes, I live in Athens. Do I know you from somewhere or did you just stumble upon my journal? You went to CIA around the same time as an ex of mine and on your interest list you mention oblongata, which is the band that my ex-fiances ex-boyfriend was in. I'm trying to figure out if I know you but I'm not sure.
friends with degram. just reading your journal. i don't know you otherwise. oblongata refers only to things that are oblongata (like the medulla): no bands or exes were intentionally referenced. names have been changed to protect the innocent. and so on.
Chris was my next door neighbor in the dorm and we got along pretty well throughout my time in school. I tried to convince him to move to NYC, but alas...
Jesse was always very cool and I haven't heard anything about him in a long time.
I don't know Michelle (i don't think: Jesse's sister?...I knew A Michelle but i don't THINK it was McKay) and I'm trying to recall Amy Casey. can't put image with name.
Small world. When I knew them they all lived in a house on E115th st.
If you were ever there then you probably met me as I pretty much lived there myself. I was dating Michelle, Jesse's sister. She was the first girl I ever fell in love with
oh man, does that bring back memories! i don't know that i ever went to their house...Jesse dating Leah? Hmm. I dated Leah, i can't think of any others...i know he dated Dana, who definitely did move to NYC and was and is QUITE well received. I took over her apartment in Little Italy, actually. I bump into her in galleries on occasion...funny girl. always asking if she has B.O. after hugging you....
Oh, and Michelle does look familiar, but I believe she was a couple years my junior (I was same as Chris and 1 year ahead of Jesse) so she would have been in foundation when I was in my major, making it unlikely that we'd meet much.
Chris is indeed very talented. he has wicked drawing skills and more to boot and he married Andrea Gaydos and went to Michigan for grad school. they might still be there, i haven't checked in a while...but he's on facebook & friendster. Jesse's a mystery, still.
anyway, i'm Liam when i'm not in LJ drag, but don't tell. kthx!
Hmm, I'll have to see if I can find Chris on FB. Michelle is on Myspace. She probably knows what her brother is up to. She was indeed a few years your junior, so it's not surprising that you don't know her well.
Marged told me who you were, although I already kinda figured it out before then. I'm Clark, but I'm guessing you may already know that? Anyway, nice to "meet" you. What kind of art do you do? I always wanted to be an artist, everyone in my family is, but I just don't have the talent.
well, i don't see what all the awkward is about. you seem like good people. i think i'm pretty good myself, heh. i started this account to basically stay abreast with what's up in m's life and haven't really branched it out from there very much...but i do like neal stephenson, so it's hard not to leave a comment.
hope it's alright?
as for art, i am a sculptor and i also do a lot of digital work 3D modeling and whatnot. have a website with some images, but ... all of my URLs are under 1 host currently and it seems something on one or some or all (??) of them got flagged and i just got an email telling me my account will be terminated for violating TOS, without telling me what i violated or how i could fix it...and moreover locked me out of my cpanel & ftp client and so i have no access to all of the uploaded data except what resides on my hard drive. so, anyway, moral of the story is, keep your domain names registered separately from your host and have at least 2 hosts for all of your important sites and be ready at a moment's notice to redirect to 1 or the other because the internet's not known for its interpersonal skills, even if you're getting mad diskspace and wicked bandwidth for $6/month. anyway, should have it resolved in a day or 2 and then you can see if you like... :) cheers
Yeah, it's totally cool. I am assuming that Marged told you about me when you were in town? She told me she did. She told me about you. Good things, nothing bad. You seem like a good guy from what I've heard from her and from our conversation here.
My mother does sculpture... mostly just forensic reconstruction now. That sucks about your website, I'll check it out in a few days.
hmm. well, nothing that I would imagine would make you feel awkward. in fact, nothing other than what is already offered in your public posts except that your name is Clark.
Cool. No problem. Thanks for friending me. I'd friend you back but I'm not sure if you want to read some of the stuff in my journal. It's your call though.
no. it's your call. i'm not pushing the issue but you privatized yourself for a reason so go with what you believe is right.
the website is back up. the first image that comes up is random and there are a few that are only accessible by reloading the page...meaning there is no direct link but sometimes randomness will reward you with something new
i have some video stuff that i need to turn into a swf and embed on the page but i've not yet.
how is the weather in athens? god i loved the smell of humidity and plant life. it really is too good
I made it private mostly just so people involved in school/job application processes couldn't read it. During the med school application process in particular they are known for checking livejournal, myspace, facebook, etc. It's all really weird.
I'll probably add you, I just have to "digest" the idea a little. If I do, try not to judge me by stuff in my past. I was kind of an asshole. I've changed a lot over the course of writing this thing.
The weather is good here. It's funny, to me this place isn't really rural. I don't know if I completely fit in to the college town atmosphere. I love really rural places. My mothers house in Tennessee is one of the few places in the world where fireflies blink in unison. It's really cool.
I could never really deal with NYC. Too crowded. I think Chicago was the biggest city that I liked a lot. Cleveland is great too. A lot of people hate it but I like that it's a bit run down and post-apocalyptic. Then again I grew up there.
dude. did i mention fireflies? i am getting a tattoo.
well. i had such a place also...the field beside my parents' house in WV. it wasn't REALLY rural, but we had a creek running through the back yard and a line of trees that followed the creek and at a certain point in the summer evenings the fireflies would all come out onto the field and you could stand in the middle and be immersed in a positive symphony of insect communication. i mean, it started out in asynchronous dischord and would resolve into these massive patterns of light spanning the whole field and then would dissipate into randomness and then another pattern would emerge. something like a Georgy Ligeti piece, if you're familiar.
anyway, Athens certainly does have some nice ruralness surrounding it. not the town but outside. i know you get accustomed to it after a while, but it was fantastic for me. and the drive through Pennsylvania & Maryland & WV was really great.
I'm posting the Cleveland part to the journal, because it was just too funny.
Nope. You didn't mention them. I just like them. I use to do genetic research that involved inserting genes for fluorescence and phosphoresce into things.
The place where you grew up sounds really cool.
Also, I checked with Michelle. Jesse is apparently still doing art and living in Lakewood, OH.
Also, after tonight I see no reason not to friend you. I hope you enjoy my journal.

trippy how just about all the technologies (short of the brain-implants) came true.
that fucker anticipated everything from second life to cellphones...
just curious, who do you know from CIA??
Amy Casey
Michelle McKay
Jesse McKay
Chris Landau
There are a ton of other people I met a few times but I can't think of their names right now.
Jesse was always very cool and I haven't heard anything about him in a long time.

Here is her picture:

Not sure if that rings any bells?
Chris was always really cool. I have a ton of his paintings and prints in my house. He was very talented. I always wonder what happened to him.
Jesse was also dating a girl, I think her name was Leah, for a while who I think ended up moving to NYC. I didn't know her so well.
Amy Casey has an LJ

Not sure what else to say, kinda...um...awkward.

duh. silly me. :)
let's move on
Any word on when the website will be up again?

I'd like to see the movies when you get them up.
